This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is unique. Our school is an African-centered academy in an urban setting within the heart of Pittsburgh. My students range in ages from 3 to 5. Alongside the regular district curriculum, we get to include Afrocentric teachings like counting and speaking in Kiswahili. For fun, we also learn to count and greet each other in Chinese, Spanish, and French.
We are a Star 4 site and a comprehensive program which works with the whole family.
We encourage autonomy in the classroom. Each student has a turn being a Star Student. The students have an "interview" and answer all kinds of questions, and we hang up their bio around the room with their picture. We look forward to creating many more interesting projects in the classroom.
My Project
Before our lessons begin, we gather the students on the rug with a drum circle. Right now we have a small hand held drum, but I am hoping to upgrade to a larger African style drum to help the students get a more authentic sound when they are sharing their beat.
Each student takes a turn bringing their own style to the drum session.
The rest of the class gets to try to follow the beat. This is such a wonderful time for students for many reasons. It helps shy students express themselves, helps active students get out their energy before they need to focus for the next lesson, and it also helps students learn patterns by trying to copy the beat.
