My Project

It is important to teach about Africa by using African voices. Each year in my 9th grade World Geo and English class we spend a whole unit looking at the history of Africa and current events in different African countries.

I pair this history unit with and independent novel project where students choose a book written by an African author.

Going into the unit students typically have a narrow view of Africa and the goal of this unit is to widen their perspectives.

Our school and local libraries have limited resources and literature by African authors, and it can be difficult for students to find a book. I want to fill my classroom library with these books to make African literature more accessible to them.
