Adventures with Ben and Kate!

My classroom will need two sets of Primary Phonics Storybooks. After my students have mastered just a few sounds, they will be able to take home a book and practice reading it. After mastering that book, another will be given until the child is able to read all 60 books. Two sets are needed in case two children are on the same title.

Step by step practice in reading is what kindergarten students need. I teach kinder in a low income/high English Learner area in California. Since what students learn in kindergarten is the first building block of education, it is crucial that students read level-appropriate books at home and at school.

In my district we have an excellent reading language arts program. It comes with mini books for the students to read. The only problem with these mini-books is that they quickly become too difficult for my low readers. My students need more books at their level before moving onto more challenging ones.

Primary Phonics is a program that provides that much need practice in reading. With this program, each student will take home a book and practice reading that book until he becomes proficient. After demonstrating mastery, he will move onto the next book. There are 60 books total, with each book just slightly more difficult than the last (for example, adding one more consonant or high frequency word). Since the books become difficult gradually, students do not feel intimidated or overwhelmed. My higher readers will also benefit from this program as they will be able to move along faster and have something to read at their level. In addition, the stories grab the student's attention with exciting adventures and amusing characters such as Ben and Kate. The illustrations are simple and kid friendly.

Your donation will make it possible for me to provide this individualized instruction for my students. It is crucial for their success to have books that they can read at home and school. Education is becoming increasing difficult as the children are expected to learn more and more at an earlier age. With these resources, my students will succeed and be ready to meet the challenges of future years. Thank you!
