My students need a class set of The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come in every day with a thirst for knowledge despite the two-hour bus ride many of them have to take and the poverty-stricken homes they leave early in the morning. Many of my students speak different languages at home but are still expected to learn the same content as the native English speakers. Over 90% of our students are on free or reduced-price lunch, indicating that their family lives near or below the poverty line. Often not able to afford school supplies or study with their children, their parents work long hours to send their students to our school in uniform and ready for learning.
Reading is a struggle, with over 70% of students reading below grade level.
My goal is to increase their love of reading by introducing engaging books they will remember for a lifetime! I want to increase their reading level and send them to middle school prepared next year!
Our students love reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe every year. It is one of those 5th grade staples that takes students on an adventure, and each year we start our winter unit by traveling to Narnia together. The students gain so much understanding of literature from this classic including character development, setting (and setting change), cause/effect, and relationships between people and events. It is truly one of the best books we read in 5th grade. However . . .
Our books are falling apart.
Pages scatter every time a book is opened and we have to use packing tape to keep them together. They are a mess and the kids hate having to put the books back together every day. Please help us provide these new books with color illustrations to increase our students' love for this adventure.
