Each student will get a monthly SuperScience Scholastic Magazine that is full of engaging colored photographs and current stories. These will be used during the reading block and during homework to encourage my students to read. My students often describe reading as "boring" and they need stories that are high-interest and that is what these magazines would provide. Scholastic Magazines are great about capturing the interests of children with engaging stories that also relate to the reading standards they need to master in 5th grade. By using the more motivating reading material, I hope that Reader's Workshop will be a time of smiles and excitement for my students.
