I work with a fun-loving and enthusiastic group of kindergarten children who attend a Language Immersion School. In this type of program, students are learning their core subjects like Math, Science and Social Studies not through the English language, but through another language instead. In our school, the language is Chinese. This is an amazing and unique program since most of our students are English speakers and have zero knowledge of the Chinese language. The transformation of monolingual children to bilingual is amazing and so fitting for San Francisco, a diverse and innovative city!
My Project
Have you ever seen the joy and excitement that comes across children's faces as they make discoveries about the world around them? It could be something as simple as running against the wind, learning a new fact or watching a caterpillar transform into a butterfly.
Kindergarten children definitely see the world with wonder and delight.
Every new experience is an adventure to them! As a teacher, I am always trying to document these special moments with my camera. I have found that the best pictures are the ones where the children are focused on the activity and not the camera. The lens I am using now, however, requires me to be up close and personal. With the new Canon lens, I will be able to stand back and still capture their learning.
The great thing about these photographs is that it can be used as writing and speaking prompts. Students can develop their communicative skills by describing and explaining what is happening in the photographs.
