My Students
My students are from a community where most homes fall below the poverty level. I bring students out on Adventure Based Learning trips and find most do not have the proper equipment. I would like to get 3 good sleeping bags to help support this program.
Our community was once a thriving logging community.
Over the years the mills have closed and been dismantled, leaving most of the population looking for work. Our school population went from about 230 to 85 in just a few years. Our students are tied closely to the outdoors and our natural resources. Our students are craving an education not just in the classroom but outside the school walls where they can experience what is discussed in the classrooms. We have a great student body but some kids struggle with sitting in a desk and learning out of a book. Our goal is to take what we do in the classroom and make it relevant for all of our students.
My Project
We will be using the sleeping bags we get to bring our students out of the walled classrooms and into a classroom without walls or boundaries. In order to make our students safe and increase their learning in the outdoors, we need to help provide the proper equipment.
Many of our students find learning more relevant and stimulating outdoors and in an environment not bound by walls.
We have found that many of our kids are able to write or journal more freely about what they see and feel outside. The learning experience becomes more relevant when you can see, smell, hear and touch what you are studying.
