Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are brave, third graders that are excited about learning Spanish in a Dual Immersion classroom. These eight and nine year old students are hungry to learn about the Spanish culture and way of life in other countries. As Franck Smith said once, "One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way."
My students are highly motivated third graders with a passion for mastering Spanish and love incorporating technology in all areas of learning.
They know that learning a new language will open many doors in the future but at the same time, they are learning to accept others. They know that speaking a new language is hard, and although they have to be brave to try and learn, it is worth it. In our classroom we celebrate diversity where although others may look or speak differently, we are all still the same.
My Project
During this pandemic, students have struggled with their motivation as a result of uncertainty. I know these materials would help increase their motivation to keep learning and practicing Spanish at home and in the classroom. Students’ use of technology has increased because of the impacts of Coronavirus. A webcam can make it possible for me to make tutorial/modeling videos that students who are struggling, quarantined, or absent for any reason can watch. These videos can also personalize student learning as students can watch and re-watch these videos while I am working with a student or small groups of students at their level.
Having quality headphones will allow my students to use their devices to show their understanding, to create videos explaining their thinking, and communicate better with students that are remote learning.
I will be able to create screencasts to model for my students and these headsets will help create better audio quality for these videos. Also, students can verbally explain their thinking in Spanish using these headphones. This will help me know how to help them. These headphones have noise cancelation making it easier to record videos and answers orally to different activities in Spanish despite other students talking close to them.
Finally, these books in Spanish would give them the motivation to read aloud, read to a partner in class, or via Zoom participating at home. New books always bring excitement and joy, this is what they need during this chaotic result of the pandemic. Books can open new doors of adventures and opportunities that maybe they will never be able to live in real life. These materials will help to stop their pandemic frustration and welcome their motivation to keep learning to speak, read and listen to Spanish.
