Additional Academic Needs

Help me give my students hone in on their academic needs with reading games and activities. Some students need support in reading comprehension and grammar while others require additional practice with handwriting.

My Students

In my fourth grade classroom, I have 19 very vibrant students who really are rockstars. Everyday, even when the work gets hard, my students come to school ready to learn and demonstrating resilience. They are certainly the reason I continue teaching every day. However, the impacts of the pandemic are evident in our classroom.

On top of the current pandemic, my students live in a low-socioeconomic community, in Harlem, New York, receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch, and qualify for after-school support.

Half of my class consists of ENL students, which means many students are learning English as a new or second language. Now that the 2022 year is beginning, I want to replenish our classroom with materials.

My Project

Students all have different academic needs. Some students need more support with reading comprehension and vocabulary. Other students need help with grammar and punctuation in their writing.

Some of our ENL students who have just joined our school require some extra support with their handwriting and high frequency words to help them begin reading.

These supplies will be used in reading and math centers, where students work on skills they need most practice and fluency in. The materials will allow centers to run smoothly and intentionally with specific student goals in mind.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
