My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. This year our town was devastated by hurricane Harvey. However they did not let this bring them down.
I teach 8th grade STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) all in one.
The greatest challenge with this class is my classroom supply list does not fit the traditional classroom budget. We use lots of consumables.
My class is 90% hands on, project based. It is teacher guided and student lead. We learn in real life situations.
My Project
In my class we always begin with research. We are learning the ins and outs of relationships within a food web, food chain and energy pyramids. My students need these tablets to research food webs in the different ecosystem and investigate the relationships within that system. This is a highly tested area on the 8th grade STAAR test and being able to use technology to support their learning would greatly improve their understanding of relationships in food webs.
Giving low-income students access to new technology is an investment in their future.
It is hard to teach technology without technology tools
