I am a teacher of the Gifted at an inner city magnet school. My students are engaged in a non-traditional learning environment geared towards educating the whole child. Students at my school perform at the highest levels of scholarship and learn in various ways. The contributing factor to the success of the students at my school is the arts program. However, in my gifted classroom, my students are engaged in various science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics projects. Since the regular education curriculum is full of arts, I introduce STEM in my gifted classroom as a much need component in developing the whole child.
Gifted students in my classroom seek out opportunities to express themselves in all areas of giftedness.
It is my personal belief that students who are not artistically gifted need avenues to express their creativity as well. STEM and STEAM projects allow them to do so. I introduced coding very cautiously to my students this year to gauge their interest and it was the best thing that I have done in my 15-year career as an educator. I love the look on their faces and the conversations with their classmates about the new curriculum.
I am a teacher of the Gifted at an inner city magnet school. Opportunities are few and far between outside of the classroom for the students that are serviced by my school district.
I want to make sure that my gifted students are engaged in the type of learning that will prepare them for the workforce of the future.
Robotics and coding has changed my students perspective on learning and life. I want them to be able to apply coding to actual robots to complete and enhance the learning experience. Having robots in my classroom will help me help them.
