Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade at Public School 30, The Wilton School located in the heart of the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. The school where I teach is tremendous: it houses over 1,000 students daily. Due to the size of the school my ability to meet the reading interests of my students is severely limited. The library's diversity and density of genres and levels is painfully shallow.
I wish for my kids to have a sense that there is a world out there that is larger than PS 115, larger than Washington Heights, larger than NYC. It is within journals, those journals that target young students, where kids will be able to discover the larger world around them. With a shortage of classroom library books, regularly published journals offer an excellent alternative for developing an appreciation of reading and learning. With the journals my students will be able to read stories about other kids, discover what is happening in the world of sports without watching the television, examine new and interesting science happenings, and most-of-all relate to the larger world by reading and analyzing texts. With luck, my students will discover that print media is multifaceted and not limited to boring books and/or math texts.
