My Students
Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least 6 different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.
At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.
Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.
I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.
My Project
Do you remember falling in love with your favorite author when you were a student in elementary school? Children are constantly exploring and discovering beloved authors in their classrooms, but some authors have stood the test of time because of the breadth and quality of their work. One of those authors is Ezra Jack Keats.
I am requesting several books from the wonderful children's author, Ezra Jack Keats.
His books are among the most well known in children's literature for their relatable story lines, colorful illustrations, and reoccurring characters. My children love the few books we currently have by Keats, but these well worn texts need to be replaced by hardcover classics.
I want to continue to expand my children's knowledge of these classics in order to further immerse them in a world of rich literature. We hope these new books will stay in our classroom for many years to come.
