My students are hard workers and want to learn, but academics of any kind are challenging for them and they are all well below grade level. Most of my students have a primary diagnosis of intellectual impairment. I teach a sub-separate life skills class. I have nine 6th grade students in my room for all but one period a day. During that one period I teach English Language Arts to a group of eleven 7-8 grade students. Most of my students have a primary diagnosis of intellectual disability.
In addition to the academic challenges, my students also have to learn life skills and social skills concepts.
Nearly all of my students require pictures or symbols in order to access the curriculum/communicate. Often the only way for my students to understand what is being presented is to provide individual pictures per student. My students require communication boards, transition boards, behavior and first/then boards, etc. Right now the only printer that is available is in black and white. B&W photos are very difficult for my students to visualize/understand what is being presented to them. It is important to get a color printer so they can get the education they deserve.
My Project
My students deserve the best education that can be provided. These students have moderate to severe special needs and require pictures and symbols to access the curriculum. By having a colored printer the students will be able to learn more efficiently in all areas of their education (ELA, Math, Social Skills, Adapted Daily Living Skills, Communication, Social Studies, Science, and Conflict Resolution). The students will have more opportunity to access the school curriculum/environment through a more developmentally appropriate route.
My students want to learn and are easily frustrated and feel down when they are struggling.
This simple solution could relieve anxiety and provide the opportunity for my students to learn and feel good about themselves.
