We have been taking our students with significant needs to Adaptive Skiing for the last few winters. It has been a highlight for the students, staff and their families to get them the help they need to be able to enjoy one of Colorado's favorite past-times.
Welcome to our school's classroom for students with significant needs!
We have 10 students, k through 5, who receive services in anywhere from general education classes,1-on-1, to small group instruction. Several are on the autism spectrum, half of them are non-verbal with limited communication skills, and they all need a lot of movement and sensory input to stay emotionally regulated.
My Project
We live in Colorado, below some of the tallest and most dramatic mountains in the State. Skiing is our favorite winter past-time and we want our students with significant needs to be able to enjoy it as much as their peers do. The Adaptive Sports Association is a non-profit that has helped our kids learn how to ski for the past few years. They use creative techniques and equipment to meet each student at their level and to allow them to ski as independently as possible.
Getting them outside and into the snow and the mountains in this way is an amazing and unique opportunity for our students.
Adaptive Sports helps make skiing accessible to them in a way that it would otherwise never be and gives them a huge amount of joy and freedom.
