it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Being a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district can be a difficult job. Working in this neighborhood/district has opened my eyes to the struggles that these students face every day. Many of the students in my school have a variety of developmental disabilities and are learning to communicate their basic needs. They present with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, and autism spectrum disorder. They may also have hearing, vision, or motor impairments as well.
They have difficult lives but are some of the happiest children and bring joy to everyone who meets them!
Any materials or visual supports that I can provide to them and the classroom is crucial in helping them succeed in communicating and learning. Help me help them.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of items that will allow my speech and language team to develop adapted materials for my students to access at their level. Our printer just recently broke and we will need to replace it in order to provide color materials to the classrooms we service. We will also need ink for that printer. The laminating pouches, Velcro, and cardstock are supplies we use every day in creating learning materials, picture symbols for communicating, and visual supports. My district and department do not allow us any budget, so anything we make and have made comes out of our pocket. With the addition of new classrooms for children on the Autism Spectrum Disorder to our building this year, the demand has been even higher for materials and supports.
We would love to be able to support our classrooms as much as possible and these supplies would enable us to do so.
For many of our students, they are learning to communicate and we hope to be able to provide them with a variety of motivators to communicate for! The materials such as the pull tubes and sensory balls are objects we use as reinforcers to encourage and teach communication with our students. The more the student enjoys the activity, the more they will want to communicate for it.
