Adapted Books for Exceptional Learners!

My students need a bookbinding system, velcro and strong laminator film so I can construct adapted books to meet their individual needs.

My Students

Reading is an activity in which everyone can thrive. My 2-5 special education students are active readers. The students in my classroom all have learning differences. As a Title I school in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, many of our students face economic challenges in addition to learning challenges. My students require specialized instruction to close the gaps that they have between their current performance and grade level expectations. Each child brings a different set of strengths, weaknesses and personal needs to the table every day. They are active, engaged learners who need adaptations to the curriculum to make it accessible to them.

Students who have learning differences along the autism spectrum often need unconventional ways to express their understanding of material they have read.

My students can be found exploring books in our classroom library, working in their direct instruction series and completing guided reading lessons as part of our school-wide balanced literacy program. I am hoping to add an adapted book library to our classroom library in order to foster independent expression of reading comprehension by all of my students.

My Project

All of my students are active readers. Many of my students need a different way to demonstrate comprehension of what they have read. Picture symbols, such as those used in adapted books, make it possible for my students to express their understanding. We need a substantial adapted book collection in our classroom library. Adapted books can rarely be found already assembled.

A book binding system will allow me to assemble and customize adapted books for the individual needs of my students.

There are many great adapted books that I can print online and with the funding of this project, I will be able to fully prepare the books for use by my students.
