Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work at an urban public school that serves students in grades 9-12. 93% of our students come from low-income families, and our student body consists of 97% minority students with a Hispanic majority. My students are kind, inquisitive, and passionate young adults who like to be challenged. Even though I teach high school, my students get so excited whenever they see new seating options.

Larger round classroom tables, rather than individual student desks, are great for student collaboration and interactive class work.

These tables are also more conducive to having wobble and bungee chairs around them. The traditional single desk and small chair set up feels restricting to many students. They are forced to sit still for eight hours a day, which can be a challenge for students who need to burn energy throughout the day. Flexible seating has been highly effective in my classroom as students feel that they can move around and find a seating arrangement that works best for them!

I'm in the process of creating a classroom space that fosters community and provides an opportunity for movement. Having colorful/comfortable seating makes students feel that we value their learning styles. Seating choices prompt students to explore what type of learning space works best for them, while creating an inviting, student-centered environment.
