My students need engaging activities to foster learning. Games like a sight word fishing game, the I spy letter game, and an elephant count and link will do the trick.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom offers a workshop for both English Language Arts and Math. Students play games help them learn and memorize in a fun way. My goal is to have all of my students recognizing their letter names and sounds, number names and quantities, memorize sight words, and to read by June '16.
My students attend a Title 1, High Priority school that has 100% participation in the free/reduced breakfast/lunch program.
Many students struggle to preform at grade level and are falling behind. Because the children come from a poor background, they are in need of engaging experiences that foster learning and help set the foundation for their continuing education. In kinder, the students are eager to learn new things, as long as they think it is fun. Games are fun for them and help students learn. Additionally, they need to learn how to read on grade level; something that is often challenging for impoverished students. An education that offers students the chance to become career and college ready is the key for them to have better future career possibilities.
My Project
The students will directly use the games and activities for learning in small groups, during workshop, and for interventions. I will use the card stock to make other sturdy learning games for them to use. The Scholastic magazines will offer an exciting opportunity to learn about the real world around them. This weekly magazine will also help expose students to other things they may not have had an opportunity to explore or learn about thus, providing enriching hands on learning. The dot markers will provide another engaging way to practice making numbers, letters, and words. Students will be excited to practice reading skills as they read the new sight word books. These materials will offer the opportunity to practice and learn foundational skills including: concepts of print; reading; letter awareness; number awareness; group cooperation; paired interaction; problem solving skills; and enrich speaking and language for both my English Language Learners and my English speaking kids.
Offering opportunities to kids that provide fun activities which encourage learning, engage students, and provide them new experiences to learn things they have not been able to experience helps to close the education gap that many impoverished children face daily.
This offers my students different future possibilities that might not have been available to them; had they not been encouraged to learn. Adding varied activities to the classroom will help accomplish increased learning.
