A typical day at our school includes up to 70 classroom disruptions for misbehavior. It is a challenge to channel that energy and remain on task. One of my favorite quotes is "Sitting still is overrated...children need to move." Tom Hunter, National Association for Education of Young Children
Our school is located in a high poverty area.
Most of the students struggle to survive, have low grades, and decreased attendance. When they are in school, the social challenges that they face on the outside affect the classroom. These children have difficulty focusing and behaving appropriately. We are trying to teach social skills every day by setting positive examples and repeating our mantra "Remember your 3 Rs. Be respectful, responsible, and reliable."
My Project
We desks that can be converted to standing desks and desk cycles. Through the use of these special desks and desk cycles we hope to keep the students engaged in learning. Both desk options will allow the student to become more active learners. It has been proved that active minds are engaged minds. The ability to move "not sit still" increases the attention span and hopefully will decrease our behavior problems. The ultimate goal is keeping the student in class, involved and excited to learn.
Through our school districts Wellness Initiative and our own personal mission we are incorporating healthy behaviors throughout our school.
We are hoping to improve instruction time in the classroom by offering creative ways to engage the mind. Not only do we provide mid-morning snack and 'brain breaks', we encourage healthy habits. Part of being healthy is being active. We can improve both with the aide of these desk options and your donation.
