Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Movement is one of the ways brains develop. It is better for the brain and body for teachers to notice that children need to move and then encourage them to do so by creating an environment in which they can be active and safe."
Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young People.
My school is a unique environment filled with diversity and acceptance.
Many of our students begin at the age of three in our pre-primary program. We cultivate a family environment and spend time getting to know our students and their families. Our students exhibit kindness and strive to be successful. The school is located in a lower income neighborhood.
Some of the students who are in my classroom require specific accommodations to meet their educational needs. These accommodations are often times very unique to the child. Each student sets personal reading goals and they strive to meet them. The students take pride in their accomplishments and it is a joy to help them achieve their goals.
Some of the students in my classroom are identified as having ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) others just need some additional movement in order to remain focused on their tasks and activities. Having options on where to complete their work is important for success.
My Project
I envision the resources I requested to be used by students who want to complete assignments and activities but may have difficulty doing so in a traditional manner. I encourage my students to work where and how they are comfortable. For some this may mean that they work best at a table or a desk. Other students may work better if they are allowed some movement. This movement may be sitting on a balance disk or a seating ball. Other students may want to work seated in a chair but with something that will keep their feet busy, such as a fidget foot rest. Many students also enjoy working on a carpet or a mat. When children are comfortable in their environment it allows them to focus on what they need to accomplish in class.
This project will make a difference for students who struggle to complete assignments simply because they need additional movement.
As with many school districts, recess and P.E. are often shortened or eliminated because meeting academic criteria takes precedence. This project will improve my classroom because it will give students the options of different working environments. As adults we know what working environment best suit our personal needs. Children are no different.
