My Project
I am a new teacher working with 5 Severe and Profound students at The Developmental Center in Rolling Acres Middle School in Peoria, Illinois. My students are between the ages of 18-22 years old, however due to multiple disabilities (cerebral palsy, visual impairment, cognitive impairment, autism, hearing loss, etc.) their functional skills are at levels between 3 months through 24 months old. To develop their skills, all our activities are adapted to support learners to be active participants in their surroundings.
To engage my learners, I am using the Active Learning approach, which emphasizes creating a developmentally appropriate and enriched environments so that students with multiple special needs become active learners.
My learners need items that mimic environmental objects (buttons, switches, textures, tasks) to not only practice functional skills such as fine and gross motor but also visual perception, auditory perception, play, and social/emotional perception.
