Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students here at our Title I school mostly come from low-income broken families that have little consistency in daily routines and even less resources for daily needs. But more often than not, these kids come to school with eager anticipation and open-mindedness ready to learn and to seek academic success. They know they are in a safe environment with adults who appreciate them for being who they are and not shunning them because of where they come from.

Ours is a small elementary school with a large population of students.

Our classrooms are overstuffed and understaffed with little to no funds for supplies and resources. Lucky for all - the staff is a close-knit family with everyone looking out for everyone else. My students are their students and their students are my students. We do everything that we can - both staff and students - to make the best of the time we have together in preparing for teaching and learning.

My Project

I have been tasked with the responsibility this year of teaching all resource students (mostly with learning disabilities) in my grade level (5th) with learning and mastering our Common Core state standards. While addressing this goal, I've noticed that quite a few (many diagnosed with either ADD or ADHD challenges) have a difficult time focusing their attention on the lesson and practice, whether it be independent, with a partner, or in a group.

The Active Learning Stools will provide an outlet for the energy and muscle tension these students accumulate that distract them from the expectations of the task at hand.

By allowing these students to shift and move without distracting nearby peers, they should be able to release the extra built-up energy and tension the have - possibly due to the frustration that comes with a learning disability - and allow a greater deal of focus and attention to the development, practice, and application on the state standards.
