A typical day in my classroom begins with music, laughter, and movement. Although I say typical, it is far from typical, because there are no desks in our classroom. Students are allowed the freedom to choose where they sit, therefore promoting them to play an active role in their learning process.
My students love to move and explore the daily content of 5th grade Science.
Much of their learning takes place through hand-on activities, such as project work and games. They are constantly on the move while listening to the catchy tunes that help in maintaining the concepts they've learned. Because I chose not to incorporate desks into the layout of our classroom, students feel free to move about as they conquer their next learning goal. They are involved in every aspect of the learning process. Benjamin Franklin said it best, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn".
My Project
The Hokki Stools I'm requesting are ergonomic stools that transforms stationary sitting into an activity. They're ideal for brainstorming sessions and other active sitting environments. Their convex base allow students to move in all directions while sitting. They can be transported from one area of the classroom to another, which encourages active learning. This will be the perfect classroom addition for moving from one activity to another. Even while sitting, students will still be able to move!
Having the Hokki Stools as an addition to our classroom will improve the students' learning environment by allowing them to have a stable piece of furniture that can move with them.
Currently, the furniture in my classroom doesn't always allow freedom of movement because of the wear and tear it causes. I have to replace many pieces of furniture yearly, because of my classroom setup which promotes active learning. The Hokki Stool is constructed to withstand daily movement.
