My Students

My students attend a neighborhood school in one of the lowest income areas, with one of the highest populations of English language learners in the area. Many students have no life experiences outside of their own neighborhood. When students enter our school, they have few academic or social skills as background knowledge. As a result, we must focus on teaching basic life and foundational skills that will give these students opportunities for later educational success.

Many of our students enter school without any prior experiences that give them the background knowledge to be successful both behaviorally or academically.

We are a Title I school where all students qualify for either a free or reduced-price lunch. Each of our students is eager to learn, but seriously lack the background to understand complex texts with high levels of vocabulary as well as the social skills necessary to become responsible, productive adults.

My Project

Our school leadership and learning team wants to provide all of our teachers with an amazing professional development opportunity. Because so many of our students are English Language learners, they have language based learning needs. Anchor charts are one strategy teachers can quickly and easily implement that will provide all students with visual resources while learning.

Learning about using active anchor charts in the classroom will impact every student on our campus.

Anchor charts provide students with a source to reference when working independently. They support students and save teachers from having to spend classroom time going over concepts multiple times.
