My Project
My students are English Language Learners from 9 countries. Some of them were also my students 2 years ago (in the Before Times) as Newcomers. After reading a sample of several texts, they unanimously choose to read Harry Potter in our English class. We've gone on a magical adventure. Most of the students have never read a book in English before, but they're doing it! I am so proud of their hard work and progress.
I want to reward them by giving each student their own copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (the second book in the series) to take home for the summer.
If they don't read it over the summer, many of them will likely have independent reading in their English class next year, and Chamber of Secrets would be a great place to start. It can be overwhelming to enter into the world of English literacy, and I want them to always feel that Hogwarts is their home.
