Mountain kids need technology too! My high school students are from low-income families from rural Appalachia. Many are known as "the mountain kids
Help take my students from "mountain kids" to "techno whizzes." All they need is exposure!
I teach Computer Applications to students in grades 9-12. This class introduces basic computer skills and the Microsoft Office Package. One would assume that by the time these students reach high school they are pretty up to speed with computers, but in reality, many of my students do not have one at home. It is my desire to introduce and provide them with the many skills needed for the 21st century.
But Miss W., "Why don't we have all that stuff?" This is what I hear daily from my students when they pass by classrooms and see the equipment other students are using. Yes, we were finally able to add an additional computer lab ... but none of the accessories needed were included in the budget.
Every semester I take my students around campus to take pictures and shoot video of their school, friends, and things that interest them. Everything from sports teams practicing, the apple orchard and a new agriculture barn that was just built. Students then download their pictures/video and develop a movie in Windows Movie Maker. It is wonderful to see their creativity and excitement from this project. We are always borrowing supplies from other teachers and many times don't have enough equipment for all the students. This is a very time consuming project and often the students don't get to put as much time into it because we may have 1 memory card reader per 24 students or there are no headphones to hear the music they add to their project. Having the additional memory card readers, memory cards, and headphones would bring many smiles and pleasure to my students. The length of the project would be cut in half to allow for additional projects and students would feel more confident knowing they were giving the time and tools to make their final movie a masterpiece!
My students want and deserve the opportunity to have and use the tools that other classes do. I've worked hard to make that a reality. Your help will ensure that my students will have the tools necessary to make the best movies possible. And who knows, we may see these "mountain kids" at a Film Festival one day.
