My students need a CD player to go with our new Listening Center and some books on CD including Where the Wild Things Are, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Tacky the Penguin.
For some of my students this is their first school experience and have not discovered how books can capture imaginations. This could be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with books. What better way to do this than giving them a variety of books on CD to listen over and over again.
My class this year consists of 24 students between the ages of 4 and 6.
They love listening to me read and listening to books on CD at our new Listening Center. They are typical children for our low socioeconomic community we live in. However, knowing this some of these students are not read to every night and need as much exposure to books in different ways to learn a love for books.
Our school currently has 5 Kindergarten classrooms and is the largest Elementary in our small town city. We often rely on parents to donate items for our classroom so we can make it through our long day (for example, snacks, napkins, cups, school supplies..etc). My hope is that this is one less thing they need to help out with to help their child grow and learn from books.
My Project
Our classroom has recently had a project funded which included a listening center. My students LOVE sitting and listening to the books I have on CD however my selection is limited. I am also realizing now that I did not include a simple CD playing with it so they can independently work at this center. The space in our classroom is limited and the CD player I requested fits perfectly inside the table instead of on top, leaving more room for students' books.
Having these materials I requested will help the students with independently using our Listening Center.
It will also help build their vocabulary, increase their love for reading, and be able to hear a variety of voices reading to them teaching them expression. Listening to books over and over is a personal favorite for my students. It helps them become independent and confident readers along with building their knowledge of subjects taught in the books.
