Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine being a student in class and your teacher has found art activities to connect to the content areas such as social studies, science, math, and language arts. The lessons take twice or three times as long because there aren't enough scissors and colored pencils to go around.
My students are hardworking students from the state of California.
They are one of the few classes I have had that embrace all forms of the arts. They love to sing and act, but for the most part are in love with the visual arts.
Our school is going through the process of becoming an International Baccalaureate School. Three of the six fundamental themes of the program are "How We Express Ourselves", "Who We Are", and "Where We Are in Place and Time". By connecting the arts to the grade level content areas, students are able to explore these themes in an environment that engages them.
My Project
With your donation to the classroom project, students will be able to use their new materials in art lessons that connect to the content areas. The markers will be used in a culminating art activity after students learn about the early European explorers and their ships. The art activity is called "Clipper Ships with Watercolors" and the markers are used to darken the lines in the paintings. The scissors will be used throughout. In math, they will be used to cut out child created patterns for tessellations. In social studies, the scissors will be used to created Jasper Johns inspired state flags. Finally, the woodless colored pencils will be used as a tool in coloring a science activity called, "From a Bug's Perspective" where the students will create an ordinary scene from the point of view of an insect. The colored pencils will also be used in an art/writing/social studies activity about U.S. landmarks and why these landmarks are important to our country.
Scissors, permanent markers, and colored pencils seem like materials that should be commonplace in every school.
But with budget cuts in all areas of education, many of these items are no longer seen as necessities in the classroom but as "extras". Engagement in the curriculum is a powerful learning tool and that's why art plays an essential part in classroom lessons. But without these materials, the students lose engagement as they wait their turn in order to complete the art activity.
