Accessible Texts for Alternative Classroom

My students need relevant and accessible texts and workbooks for science and social studies. Currently, I'm creating all lessons with no set curriculum. My students deserve better. The texts I've selected are accessible, relevant, and engaging.

My Students

I teach an alternative self-contained middle school classroom. In my classroom, students receive ELA, math, science, and social studies instruction from me. My classroom is for students who are unable to access mainstream classes due to social, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges.

My students range from 5th to 8th grade and their instructional levels range from 2nd to 9th grade.

Some individuals have strong academic skills, but their behavior impedes performance/ instruction. Other individuals struggle in all academic skills as well as struggling emotionally, socially, and behaviorally.

My Project

I need accessible textbooks and workbooks for all of my students. After much research, I have selected the ACCESS texts and workbooks to implement in my classroom. These textbooks have simple, straight forward explanations that will be reach my students at all levels. There are visuals paired with concepts that will assist my students who benefit from visual supports. Vocabulary has been pared down and language has been simplified to focus on mastery of key concepts.

I will use the materials I've selected with my students daily.

I will provide specialized instruction focusing on the student edition text in small groups. At the same time, others will complete independent work in the student activity journals.

My students will be exposed to relevant and engaging information on science and history topics with these materials.
