I run a self-contained alternative middle school classroom. My students are unable to access mainstream classes due to social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Some of my students are unable to access academics due to behavioral needs. Others have cognitive and academic needs in addition to behavioral needs. Many of my students struggle to self-regulate throughout the day. Others think about the challenges in their home life, whether it's a sibling in jail, no food in the cabinets, or extreme discipline from a parent. They struggle to make connections with peers despite their longing to connect. School is difficult for my students. My focus is to give frequent, immediate feedback on behaviors, implement a behavior plan with incentives and consequences, and make connections with my students. I strive to help them succeed and make school a better place for them.
