My Project
I am a NYC educator who teaches students with visual impairments ranging from low vision to blindness. I teach students in multiple schools in various grades ranging from pre-k to high school. They are a diverse group and many have additional disabilities such as autism, learning disabilities, and motor challenges. Students with visual impairments rely heavily on assistive technology in order to access the curriculum. The use of a computer and a wireless printer is imperative to plan, prepare, and adapt the materials my students need to succeed.
Your donation to our project will help my students develop their computer skills and provide them with access to high quality scans, copies of assignments, graphics, and other classroom materials that are critical for students with visual impairments.
Computer operating systems have built in accessibility features that make a device easier to use. Using the laptop, my students with low vision will learn how to adjust the screen to meet their individual visual needs. For example, they can adjust the contrast, font size, magnification, and mouse and icon size. Apple products have a built-in screen reader accessibility feature called VoiceOver. This feature is used to describe the information on a computer screen for users who are blind and visually impaired. Having access to an Apple laptop during our vision sessions will ensure students are receiving individualized instruction using VoiceOver.
My students with low vision have unique visual needs and require high quality worksheets and materials that are appropriate, provide good clarity and are accessible. As an itinerant teacher with many students in different schools, I do not have access to a high quality color printer. Having a computer and printer will allow me to adapt high quality material ahead of time.
