Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
P.S. 154X is a dynamic school that strives to foster a love of reading and learning within each student. As a fourth/fifth-grade classroom teacher for the past three years, I have discovered that students' interest level in particular topics and/or materials is an extremely important resource as we seek to develop their critical thinking and analytical skills. As facilitators of knowledge, we must become informed about what interests our students and thus provide them with materials that satisfy that curiosity.
In my experience, students are specifically attracted to science topics; students look at our world with an inquisitive eye, wanting to know how everything in our scientific world functions. While attempting to engage students' thinking through hands-on experiments, however, I have found that they lack the content knowledge to best make sense of their findings. For this reason, they need scientific reading materials. Unfortunately, my class is lacking such a resource.
Scott Foresman's leveled libraries expose students to all the units necessary for elementary science success. Moreover, they've developed a program geared to reaching learners at different reading levels. Below-level, On-level, and Advanced selections give all students reading experiences about the same topics but at different levels, reaching all of them. For this reason, this series promises to give all my students the content knowledge they so desperately need.
The library would thus be used for science instruction, divulging much-needed science information that will enhance the students' understanding of experiments we will conduct throughout the year. Once the students are informed, they will use that knowledge to research topics that interest them. Furthermore, the books will facilitate small-group instruction because they come in groups of six. I would actually be able to lead science guided-reading groups.
It is with much enthusiasm that I ask you to help us become better scientific thinkers. You will be helping a group of students develop their understanding and appreciation of the natural world around us.
