Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in rural Texas. I will be teaching Texas history to about 125 students which include ELL students. Our demographics have shifted dramatically over the last 5 years. We are now predominantly Hispanic. We lack technology in our classrooms and over 800 students have to share 4 labs on our campus. Poverty is a huge issue in our community, as well. Our students lack basic technological equipment and internet services at home and within our community.
Our community was greatly affected by Hurricane Harvey due to having to evacuate entire families/pets and having to close businesses for over a week.
Many families lost their income and some permanently lost their jobs due to the storm. Many homes flooded and people lost almost everything. I have students who are still trying to get some normalcy back into their lives.
My Project
I have 125 students. We share 5 Chromebooks. We need more access to information for research, projects and daily classroom assignments. Much of their work is done collaboratively because we don't have access to technology. I value collaborative work, but sometimes I need to see what they can do independently. That is where the additional Chromebooks will come into play. I'd also love for them to be able to submit assigned work to me or create videos, learn coding, etc. We are crippled with such limited access to technology. 5 more Chromebooks will give ACCESS to more
