Access to Books, Visuals, and Materials

Help me give my students a safe bookshelf that will not tip if a student bumps into it due to both gross motor needs and sensory needs, chart paper for more visual lessons, and access to teaching materials.

My Students

"There's no person in the world like you, and I like you just the way you are."-Mr. Rogers

I am a first-year teacher starting in a brand new self-contained unit at an elementary school.

I started with three wonderful students and I've just added one more to the group! They are the most hard-working and sweetest students I could have imagined having the honor to teach.

My students need appropriate shelving for the classroom. If I have safe and heavy-duty shelving, I will not have to be concerned that the shelves will fall if a student bumps into them. I've been able to find items for my classroom through thrifting and used items that can be sanitized. However, I need new shelving that is up to current safety standards for a special classroom where students have motor and sensory needs.

All that being considered, I can't wait to make them feel safe and confident in my classroom using my time and love, which are 100% free resources.

My Project

My classroom has become a safe space for my students to independently navigate. They are able to currently access sensory materials, an imaginative play center, blocks, and play animals. However, I do not have a sturdy bookshelf for them to independently select books.

Access to the books in their classroom is essential for independence and the development of decision-making skills.

A safe bookshelf would give my students, with fine-motor, gross-motor, and sensory needs, opportunities to explore books.

Additionally, chart paper will help me make my whole-group lessons more engaging visually. I do not have access to higher technology, such as a Smartboard, so chart paper is an effective solution. I like how it encourages active participation so they can write and help on the paper as well.

Teachers Pay Teachers has given me more tools to use in my classroom than I could have ever imagined. I don't have breaks in my day for planning, so using resources that have been utilized in other classrooms saves me time. I lesson plan and write my IEPs after school until 5 pm, so being able to print and prep a supplemental resource that is engaging in less time is amazing.
