Accelere Aquatic Society Pollinator Wildlife Habitat Creator

We need an analyzer electronic 4 -way, flower pots, and peat pots to develop more Wildlife Habitats for home and their community areas.

Mr. Graham Blackburn Alternative School - Accelere Program
Omaha, NE Grades 9-12

About My Students

Nickolas, Breonna, Dakota, and Hailey are working with Serve Nebraska, Habitat for Humanity, Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation, and the National Council of Jewish Women Omaha Section to certify Wildlife Habitats with the National Wildlife Foundation for their community areas.

This last year my students have been working on Nebraska Academy of Science and the Nebraska Environmental Trust Plant Laboratory to grow native pollinator plants to give to the community for free. This is a way to enrich low developed areas with affordable landscaping while also increasing pollinator habitats. The students want to grow bigger plant sizes than currently the lab can hold due to space restrictions. In this project students can install the new plant in a bigger pot than the peat pot to grow out in. Then the students will replant at the Habitat for Humanity Grow Out that is used to grow trees such as the Eastern Redbud that helps the pollinators. This will grant both the lab, students, and the community a larger area to develop bigger plants to give to the community for free. Serve Nebraska, Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation, and the National Council of Jewish Women will fund the native seeds to be grown by the students.

With the University of Nebraska College of Natural Resources the University of Nebraska Cosmic Ray Observatory Project students at Accelere will explore with the Mead Nebraska CSR detector how cosmic rays affect plants. Nickolas and Breonna are University of Nebraska Cosmic Ray Observatory Project students that also do daily data collection for the university and the National Science Foundation. While in our program they also attend web casts and workshops at the university campus. The data and knowledge that these students attain foster deep learning and preparation for their post high school plans.

In Their Own Words

We want to increase the habitat for the butterflies while also giving back to the people in our area. Breonna and myself are UNL Cosmic Ray students applying our knowledge we obtained by taking Physics with Mr. Graham. We both operate UNL detectors and with the extension with another professor in the College of Natural Resources we remotely obtain data from a CSR detector in Mead, Nebraska. I plan to go to college after I graduate this May. I have donated material and worked the lot on Saturdays.

I attended a meeting with Mr. Graham at Habitat for Humanity where we discussed several ideas of maintaining and increasing lot production. I am a Vice President of Accelere Aquatic Society and have been taking over the President duties until the election is over. In the meeting I offered to assist to develop the area after school. I was the first student to survey the property and work with Habitat for Humanity supervisors on the initial development of that area to be certified.

Our area is a highly urban area of concrete and vacant lots. With this project we create green space, the ability to work on learning projects, apply what we have learned, and leave the area a nicer place for all around it. This project will help the butterflies and people with plants that assist everything. Some of the students take the plants home to start their own butterfly garden. I have even talked to Habitat for Humanity about volunteering and working there with them.
