My Students

My 27 fifth grade students are ready to take on the classroom library I have spent 10 years of teaching creating, from garage sales and thrift stores. Our classroom only has one computer, requiring students to sometimes wait up to 3-4 days to take an Accelerated Reading quiz over their book.

Our school is large, but students are not a number.

They are caring and respectful. My fifth graders love reading! So much so, that they are passing their love of reading on to our kindergarten "book buddies", modeling great reading strategies once a week. My students have all set personal goals, and are striving to meet them. For some it is as simple as moving from a picture book to a chapter book, others to try reading a different genre of book for the first time. They are learning to make predictions, and connections with text as they read, and learning that reading can be fun and entertaining.

My Project

The great thing about Accelerated Reading is that students have a chance to read books on their reading level, and test their understanding of the book they just read. They love logging onto the computer and "Showing What They Know." A Netbook computer will allow my students to take comprehension and vocabulary quizzes over the AR books that they have read. Technology can connect my students with others across the United States as well! They will get a chance to post online reviews of books encouraging other students to pick up the book they just finished! With this extra computer in the room more students will be able to test quickly and keep reading.

Nothing is more moving as a teacher than seeing a child fall in love with a book!
