At our low-income/high-poverty school with 100% of the students qualifying for free lunch, my students are faced with several challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. These children encounter issues that most adults are not equipped to handle. Because they face so many challenges, I feel it is my duty to provide creative and meaningful learning experiences.
The challenges that my students face should not be a determining factor in their success.
COVID 19 has devastated my school community and we are in need of resources that can help combat the effects of the pandemic. My scholars live well below the poverty line with 100% of my students receiving free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Additionally, a high percentage of the children are being raised in single-parent households, live with various relatives, or are in foster care. My classroom is extremely diverse and includes English-speaking and different levels of English language learners. These children deserve a chance to be successful and I will do what it takes to help them get there.
Our school community is poverty-stricken, so the need for the students to have a daily presence of learning is vital to my students' growth and development. Despite the challenges they face, my students are come in eager and ready to learn every day! The return from virtual learning to in-class instruction was not an easy one. There were numerous issues (lack of technology, inconsistent internet service, and food insecurities) that keep students from being able to actively participate in virtual learning. It was quite evident with the lack of progress that the students were behind in their learning. They lack the skills to meet learning targets set for their grade levels.
In order for my scholars' goals to be met, I am creating an incentive and reward system as compensation for a job well done.
The items requested (books, small toys, and snacks like hot cocoa) will be used as prizes to motivate the students to show growth in their learning. It is my goal to have each student reach their learning potential by showing academic growth and accomplishing their grade-level targets by the end of the year. Your support will help us get there!
