Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 14 to 21-year-old English Language Learners from Mexico, Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Somalia, Ethiopia, Oromia, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, and Kenya.
My students are resilient, hard-working, caring, hilarious newcomer students from all over the globe.
They are dedicated to learning English while preserving their connection to the culture and language of their home country.
They are artists, dancers, soccer players, poets, readers, singers who came to the United States for asylum, opportunity and freedom. They will leave this country in better shape than they found it.
My Project
As newcomer English Language Learners, my students are constantly seeking opportunities to practice their conversational English skills outside of the classroom.
The library is a perfect place for students to feel welcome to practice their conversational English skills through play, exploration and creative expression.
Games, conversation cards, art supplies, as well as art for the walls will create a welcoming environment for them. Students not only use the library for research and reading, but also as a place to build community and practice language skills.
The world map will remind our students that we honor their home countries, cultures and language. When the map is hung, I will give all current and future students an opportunity to place a pin to show others where they are from which will help us further build community and create a welcoming environment for all.
