Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a wonderful Title I elementary school in Northern California. My students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds and most receive free or reduced-price lunch. More than 50% of our students are English Language Learners.
These students are hardworking children who come to school excited about the daily lessons.
I would like these children to have every opportunity available that will improve their chances to succeed while understanding our daily lessons. Having all the supplies available to help the children learn their daily lessons is very important.
My Project
If you teach kindergarten, literacy centers are a part of your day. When teaching kindergarten, I incorporate centers into literacy, math, and free play, as well as occasionally during science and social studies.
Centers are a great way to get students actively involved in their learning.
Literacy centers are made up of books, puzzles, phonics centers, listening centers etc... I’ve heard that a kindergartener's attention span is about 5-6 minutes, which is incredibly short! That means that we need to try to minimize whole group sitting and listening time. In turn, we need to maximize hands-on, independent learning time. Having students work in centers gives them important independent practice time, and it also allows us to give children more individualized attention as they meet with us in small groups. We want to make it fun for the students but at the same time academically meaningful. The puzzles I am asking for all touch upon key learning skills my students need. They will learn how to spell and read sight words, how to rhyme, as well as, blend sounds.
The phonics centers will allow me to differentiate my students' learning and also save me the time from having to create centers from scratch.
