All students should feel safe enough to explore, understand, and embrace their feelings. Having a safe space in our classroom gives my students an opportunity to do this, where their only goal is to relax and manage any range of emotions they might encounter throughout the school day.
My students work through a range of feelings and emotions on a daily basis.
Whether from big life events happening at home, learning a new challenging skill in math, or working through obstacles with friends, this Zen Zone space can support them when their feelings become too much. Books about emotions and mindfulness help students feel safe and understand that these feelings are normal. Sitting down with a good book can take your mind away from the world around you. Fidgets will allow my students to focus on what they can control at the moment and give their hands something to do while they think things through. The flexible floor cushions allow the whole class to create a Zen Zone on the go or have a mindful moment as a class.
All of these items allow students to have independence, knowing they can use them on their own when things feel overwhelming. Often, the Zen Zone in our classroom is used for independent thinking, emotion regulation, and mindfulness, and then I can support them as they need. It is also an amazing place to sit and support students when they feel alone or overwhelmed. These items will help foster mindfulness and emotional awareness so they can overcome whatever is thrown at them!
