Using mature precise words within a piece of writing is a difficult task for students if they lack a top quality thesaurus that is not too primary yet is not an adult thesaurus either.
I teach 5th grade language arts in a large school district in Florida.
Our school serves a very diverse population from students who come from low socioeconomic homes to children of privilege. This means that there are a variety of challenges. There is a huge range in vocabulary knowledge when writing, making learning to elaborate ideas in writing difficult.
My Project
With a class set of age appropriate thesaurus' at my students disposal, the quality of their writing will soar. Very often when students are using our current set (which is not only very primary but very incomplete), they cannot even find the word that they want to up in quality let alone find better choices. When they do find an entry within our current resource book, no examples of how to use the word are provided. Students then very often use the words imprecisely in their writing. This specific edition has high quality words presented in a way that I not only foresee students successfully using it, but also enjoying the hunt for top-notch words.
I see this thesaurus resource as a way to help enrich my student's word knowledge, which will lead to more confident writers who can fully elaborate their ideas both creatively and maturely.
