I teach 5th grade language arts in a large school district in Florida. Our school serves a very diverse population from students who come from low socioeconomic homes to children of privilege. This means that there are a variety of challenges. We have children who lack adequate resources at home to children who have so many trappings of a modern world so that a love of literature is often not of primary importance to them. When I find a series of books that hold their attention, I strike when the iron is hot (so to speak).
