My Students

I am a K-8 school counselor working with a diverse group of students who overcome obstacles on a daily basis. Each student is unique in personality and talent. The resiliency they have displayed during this shift to online learning is commendable.

My Project

My students are faced with the challenge of living through an uncertain time. Their fears are real and anxiety is at an all-time high. My job is to protect and support my students as they navigate through life and reach developmental milestones. The challenge now is even greater, as I work from home trying to interpret conversations through video, texts, and phone calls.

As humans, we are encouraged to interact with others from an early age, to share ideas and experiences.

Suddenly being forced to stay home and avoid contact with friends and relatives leave my students feeling bored, isolated, and unsettled by a lack of routine - or frightened they might get ill.

The books I am requesting are meant to be used as a read-aloud during my sessions. I know my students are missing out on the personal connection, the confidentiality of their conversation, the safe space we've created in my office; thus, being introduced to the right book at the right time can help calm fears, reduce anxiety and provide tools that will help them adjust to a new set of circumstances.

All the books were selected with intention. I read many reviews and visited websites for counselors who share best practices. These books will not only be used during the pandemic but will be useful upon our return to the school building. I usually begin my sessions with a mindful activity than read aloud. Thank you for taking the time to help support my students' social/emotional well being.
