Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to one thousand students that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socio-economic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English Language Learners and many of them have learning disabilities. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Seeing the excitement in kids' eyes when they learn something new makes teaching the best job ever. My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning.
My Project
This book is essential for classrooms that are trying to reinforce positive character traits in their students. With so much to discuss, this book makes for a memorable read aloud, as a literature circle selection, or as a whole-class novel. Along with kindness, this book is rich with other themes such as anti-bullying and having compassion, acceptance, and empathy for others. Students will be able to relate to these themes and how Auggie, the main character in the book, desires to want to fit in, not stand out. This story teaches, entertains, and inspires the reader to be a better person.
