My students are young enough to have only really known the world after Covid. Their early childhood had periods of isolation, fewer playdates, and social distance. They live in a world that is in front of a screen and they don't know how to read body language. As a result, many students struggle with social skills as they didn't get the adequate time to practice them naturally as young children do with neighbors, at the park, or even at preschool.
We are seeing many students lack empathy toward their classmates and they need specially designed instruction to learn empathy skills.
The games and books I want will teach students what it is like to walk in the other person's shoes and feel their emotions as well as what caused it and how to help fix any problems. Spending a few minutes a day with a special education teacher or school counselor can teach our students these important social skills in a fun, play-based way. This will help reduce suspensions and lost instruction. They will learn how to be a good friend and classmate which will help them in school and in life.
Empathy is such an important skill and our young students are struggling. Thank you for helping them.
