My 6th graders are a wonderful and excited group of human beings. They get so excited about history and current events. We have had some great discussions about turtles and straws. They have also enjoyed working on fundraising activities to help support our school.
Our school is above 60% poverty level.
Students have to travel by bus to get to school, so they do not have a lot of opportunities to work with the school and community based activities. In my classroom we have been working on projects that involve community members and outside agencies. Students are learning about issues in our global community and responding to the need in our local community.
Students will read the novel and learn about people in need. They will participate in a walk (for water) a-thon. Then they will work with the local 4H community liaison to make hats and scarves that will be shared locally (students will decide if that is the homeless center, veterans, hospice patients, foster children, etc.)
My hope is that this is a grassroots movement, where students will take this project and run with it.
I am hoping that they will come up with other ideas to help support their community and environment. I hope that you can help us with this project! Thank you!!
