I teach French in high school grades 9-11. In the French class students learn about the different French-speaking countries. Along with cultural learning, they also learn to speak about themselves and how to interact with others in the target language.
My French class students are bright and enthusiastic learners.
The majority of my students come from a low income district. They have never traveled outside the country and we rarely take local trips due to school budget cuts. Although some of these students may not bring with them all the materials they need for the class, they are there and they are eager to learn new things about a different culture and try to speak a different language.
My Project
Most of my students have never had the opportunity to travel outside the country to experience the culture of a French speaking country and practice speaking with native speakers of the language they are learning in the classroom. Traveling abroad is nearly impossible for most of these students due to the fact that they come from low income homes and some of them can barely afford food on their table every day.
During this trip, students will be visiting a school in Quebec and do class activities with Canadian students.
We will also visit several museums and historical sites. Students will get to taste authentic Canadian food for the first time in their lives in Canadian restaurants. I think that the students need this travel opportunity in order to understand and excel in the language better and, most importantly, get to practice the language they are learning in real life situations with native speakers. If it were in my capacity, I would take all of my students but if I can take a few, it is still better than none.
