My Students

Let's face it, history can seem pretty boring when not taught properly. But when taught right, history can be fun and fascinating. The wonderful book "By the Great Horn Spoon" helps make California's Gold Rush history all of that and more. Plus, I'm asking for math bingo and backgammon games.

My 4th grade students come from a variety of backgrounds.

The majority are African American, a third are Hispanic, and the rest are white. They are full of energy and enthusiasm, and love to read. Their academic abilities range from advanced to far below grade level. Our school is a Title 1 school in Los Angeles, California. Title 1 refers to a school with a high percentage of students from low income families.

My Project

Sid Fleischman's wonderful book "By the Great Horn Spoon", really makes the Gold Rush come alive for the students, and it reinforces perfectly what we have been studying in the classroom. (California history is the 4th grade social studies curriculum.) It also helps the students learn how to sound like 49ers when it comes time to write in their journals. Every student that I've ever had has loved this book, and, as a result, has loved studying about this exciting period in California's history. I have one old copy of the book, yet it would be best for each student to have a copy to read. Also, I'm requesting 3 basic backgammon sets as I would like to start a backgammon club at lunchtime for my eight gifted students. Lastly, I am requesting math bingo games to reinforce 4th grade standards and help kids learn math skills while having fun. The set includes multiplication, division, geometry, fractions, decimal/percent conversion, and problem solving strategy games.

Good literature that brings history to life for kids is invaluable in the learning process.

Students will learn the social studies curriculum and get a real sense of that time period and what it was like for people during the Gold Rush. Furthermore, math games and backgammon will help develop students' math, strategy, and reasoning skills.
