My Students

This generation of learners is called the Millennium Generation. Studies have shown that using technology to teach this group is essential. This under privileged community of learners needs your help in stepping into the technological era of their generation.

My students are 90% African American 10% American Samoan.

This K-5 school has the highest number of foster kids in the district. Child Protective Services visit this school daily. For nearly all of these students, life is a struggle and equity is rare. The school is in a low income crime infested area. Police "lockdowns", where we are unable to leave the school due to a person with a gun running through the school yard or surrounding neighborhood, are a monthly to bi-monthly occurrence. Teachers do not end up staying over a year due to the overwhelming experience of teaching in this community. I have been the librarian here for 3 years and have seen 8 teachers come and go.

My Project

The library represents a window into the bigger world. The bigger world includes the many amazing resources the World Wide Web holds. Without the proper guidance through this resource, students might not fully experience the abundance of it's power. Lessons using the requested laptop will include information technology literacy, educational video streaming from Discovery Education's United Streaming (www.discoveryeducation.com/about us), the public library's databases such as Novelist (www.ebscohost.com/novelist/special/novK8Tour/default.htm), our own online catalog of book bibliographic information. As well as lessons on cyber safety, cyber bullying and online integrity. The list is endless, the laptop is a tool for us to explore the world out side of the library together.

I work in two libraries in this school district and see the gap between neighborhoods and demographics.

I use technology lessons in the other school because I have the resources there to do so. I see how the students benefit from the practice, discussion and lessons given on information technology. This laptop is one piece of the bridge to close the equability gap. A laptop coupled with our projector will bring the world to us. Please help me meet the goal of educational equability
